Allocated memory stuck at 910 MB

I was at my friends house and he was allocating more RAM to his Windows laptop and was doing the same to his families MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8). He allocated 2048 MB of RAM and I allocated 1024 MB. He went into the game and clicked f3 but it still showed that 910 MB was allocated. The same happened to me.
