i get this message "io.netty.channel.abstractchannel$annotatedconnectexception" followed by unable to connect or something like that, i just bought minecraft for my dad so we could play together, if this cant be fixed i want a refund, cause ive spent a few hours trying.

1.12.2 isn't supported anymore and this is a Java networking issue. You to give permission to firewall for Java/MC on both computers, see this article. You can get more help here.
