All the pre-existing fences except Nether Brick Fence connected as usual, and Crimson Fence and Warped Fence connected to each other, however they didn't connect to any other fence types.
The thing is they do connect to other fence gates just like nether brick fence do, so perhaps this was intentional. Just wanted to point this out just in case it is a bug

We're actually already tracking this issue in MC-171286, so I resolved and linked this ticket as a duplicate.
