I was able to make the rotation of the oak log change without placing it on a new block. I simply right and left clicked at the same time on the face i desired it to face and it rotated. This is happening in creative, but with perfect timing It might be remade in survival. Its not urgent, but it doesn't seem natural.

We're actually already tracking this issue in MC-154298, so I resolved and linked this ticket as a duplicate.
