Map crashes game when picked up if it has signs in the area

Me and my friend went to pick up and update the maps that where in a 3x3 block high formation. Once he took out the middle map, it crashed his game and didn't allow him in the server, the error was internal exception, he then managed to throw it out of his inventory and it stopped crashing. I then picked it up and started getting the same error and the same things happened until I managed to drop it.

I had the same issue. I downgraded the server to 20w11a and threw the maps away and that worked.

Can confirm. Looking at a map while standing in the mapped area crashes the client. Here's a typical error log I get:

If you're affected, spam-press any number button that is not the map you're holding while joining, you have a small window in which you can switch items.

The same happens to me and my friends!

I'm running the latest snapshot server. (20w12a)

It looks like this is caused by the map trying to load signs in the world.

The fix is easy though, you just need to throw it out as soon as you join or switch your current slot.
