Instead of allowing to burn some large items, I'd think it would be better to have a recipe (or mechanism) to "scrap" or recycle such large items into smaller items (like a share of their creation items, or variants like ingots into nuggets), that can then be burned (or used in other useful manner). (Could apply to e.g. beds, tables, bookshelf, and almost all full block sized items.)  However, this would be a feature request, but in the context of "fixing" this issue, it might be considered as an alternate solution/fix.

The fact that torch and campfire can not be used as fuel simply doesn't make sense.

Almost as weird is that paper and book can't be used, when at least real life paper burns very well, though it burns also fast, so doesn't really melt that much compared to the amount of it.

I think he is referring to the number of items melted by each item used as fuel (or item that should be possible to use as fuel) is not as expected from the amount of materials needed to make the fuel-item (or no melting at all, since the item can not be used as fuel in the first place).

To smelt an ore, it is better to use a blast furnace.

The smoker is only for food.
