2x2 spruce/dark oak/jungle wood doesn't grow

I can't get 2x2 trees to grow, there is nothing in the way and even with bonemeal nothing happens.

Same issue. I managed to get grown only 1 large spruce out of 6 tree for 2 stacks of bonemeal.
