Dark oak saplings will not grow

I have been unable to get dark oak saplings to grow. They are placed on dirt blocks in a 2x2 with no blocks above. I have tried bone mealing the saplings, and have gone through multiple stacks of bone meal.  I also moved the saplings and dirt to a second area with nothing around, but this has not succeeded either.
