2x2 Trees Not Growing

Using the growing guidelines for clear space and layout, I have been able to grow any 2x2 tree using over 2 stacks of bone meal. I am able to grow all 1x1 trees, but 2x2 refuse to grow using bone meal or just allowing over time.
