Night vision turns screen completely black when underground

While exploring in a cave in creative mode, i used a night vision potion to avoid using torches, approximately 45 seconds in, my screen turned pitch black. I repeated this process with a splash potion of night vision and it result duplicated. I again tried doing this above ground during the night, but it did not happen this time. I have concluded that this only occurs when underground with no light coming in.
