Turtle is pale, has black shell and is faceless.
I tried to quit and re-load, but then no sort of textures are even loaded.

Seems that somehow I needed to use 2 resource packs for all the built-in textures to load and somehow one of them wasn't selected and it wasn't displayed at first. My mistake...
Are you using a resource pack?
