The Bug
I went to sleep in-game. My cat came to lay with me. I woke up, and the cat was outside my house.
This only happens randomly. But this is kinda weird.
How to reproduce:
Put your bed in a corner where behind the 2 walls in the corner is just outside.
Set or wait for the time to be nighttime.
Make sure your cat is standing before you get into your bed.
And make sure the door leading to the outside of your house is closed.
Once your cat is standing, hop into your bed
And make sure your cat comes to lay down with you on your bed and puts on its sleeping animation while with you on the bed.
Observed behavior
It sometimes happens that once you wake up, your cat will be outside.
Expected behavior:
Once you wake up, the cat should always wake up right where it sleeps and spawn items right there.

I still experience this on 1.17-Release-Candidate
I'll include the how-to reproduce steps in the description.
I am actually able to reproduce this issue in 1.17 Release Candidate 1. It happens very rarely and is quite rare though.
Every once in a while when you and your cat wake up, it just spawns a distance away from the bed. Might cause it to be outside of the room if it was in one. Cat gift items are spawned where the cat spawns upon waking up, so will be left there as it walks back to you.
I am no longer having issues with this as of 1.20.3 RC 1. It seems to have been fixed. Though I don't see it listed.
Can confirm in 1.21. This does not appear to happen if the gamerule doDaylightCycle
is false because then the cat doesn't bring any gifts. Therefore I assume this is related to the gift bringing mechanic somehow and may be intentional? Either way it's a bit weird, since in my case (this happens constantly in my survival world) the cat likes to teleport downwards.
Here's a screenshot of my testing setup (1.21 Creative) - it sometimes appears on the other side, sometimes below, and sometimes right at the bed:
