Horses don't actually exist after closing and reopening minecraft

After spawning horses with spawn egg, taming, then saddling them, they were attached with leads to fences. I closed the game and later reopened the file and now the leads have disappeared and the horses cannot be punched or ridden and I cannot access their inventory.
