I'm going to describe it but you need to know that piston and sticky piston have the same issues,
First you place a piston facing any direction but with less than 12 block in front of him (So you can see that he activate) and 2 air block at the top of him
Then you will place a basic block (like stone, sandstone ...) at the top of the piston (even if he is facing the sky) and a redstone block above the basic block
The piston has not extended yet
But if you break the basic block, that will update the piston and he will extend. you can break the redstone block and he will still be activated but then as soon as you update it without the redstone block 1 block above him he will retract
This can also work with different setup for example on the video I didn't put the redstone block from a solid block that touch the piston but this still work

Hello there, this is a bug that became a feature, it's described in MC-108, and many of the Minecraft Java tech community loves this bug, and get very angry if it would be removed. That does not necessarily mean that this bug won't be ever fixed, or that it would not become more logical with future improvements in Minecraft Java Redstone, but for the time being this is "intended", for lack of a better solution.
