Normally, when using /clone to replace an area with a chest in it, the chest will be removed without dumping its items onto the ground like it would if it were broken. However, when cloning over an area with a chest containing ungenerated loot, cloning over it will cause it to generate the loot, and dump the loot onto the ground.

So as you can see in this video, I'm using a command block to spawn a chest with random loot inside of it.
The first two times I use the clone command, I generate the loot inside the chest prior to the command, and it doesn't drop its items.
The second two times I use the clone command, I do not open the chest, so the loot isn't generated yet. Cloning over it causes the block to generate its loot and then spit it onto the ground.
Ah, thank you.
It seems like this has already been reported before, see MC-136917.
