if I build a contraption like shown in the video below I can place little blocks (like leavers, candles, torches) through the moving block. I don't think anyone reported this already.

Either what happened was that the torch really went through, or that when the slime blocks were being pulled, there was a "gap" which you put the torch through.

It's because of the piston animation. while it is running the hitboxes are turned off

This appears to be a duplicate of MC-103071, which was later marked as "Won't Fix". The developers at Mojang have decided not to fix this issue. See the parent ticket for further details.
