When I try to sprint, the speed effect comes delayed, which is really annoying, and happens in both survival modes as far as I know.

Sprinting acts very laggy. Mojang changed how sprinting works in 1.6.1, causing sprint to act very laggy, except when you play on a local server. This will be fixed by Mojang in 1.6.2.
