when i hold a barrier block it wont show other barrier block

I was playing on a flat world then i tried to trap a sheep inside barrier block but then i noticed that my barrier block didnt show when i hold one of the barriers i didnt have any mods or resorce packs i asked my friend was it because of the update then he said no.
