I just bought the game but i cant join servers or have a custom skin on even when im in single player

I cannot change my skin i have a costom skin that my friends use and i put it on but it only shown alex and when i join servers it says they are down for maintenance

Try directly on minecraft.net once you log in go in your profile you'll see the skin section.
