I had a trident enchanted with Loyalty III, Channeling, Impaling V, Unbreaking III and Mending. During a thunderstorm at night, I took aim at a phantom many blocks in the air, threw and missed and never saw the trident again. Seconds later and very close to where I had been standing when throwing the trident, a pack of Skeleton Horsemen spawned and attacked. I didn't notice them before throwing the trident, but it did seem as though they spawned shortly after.
After the storm ended and I had dealt with the Skeletal Horsemen, I created a new trident with the same enchantments by using the cheat codes. I attempted to recreate the throw, but the trident returned each time. I did not change the weather back to thunderstorm and did not change the day cycle to night when doing so.

Thanks for the response. When I threw the trident, I was aiming high in the sky at some phantoms. I think maybe I happened to throw it the moment the Horseman Trap appeared near me, but I didn't notice it until several seconds after the trident had disappeared. In any case, there was no explanation as to why it didn't return.
This evening (2 days later irl) I was fooling around in the End under the home portal, and lo and behold! My trident had appeared in my inventory! If a moderator did it, thanks a bunch, but if that just happened as a game mechanic, it's pretty fascinating. I assume it returned to my inventory when I entered the end from the overworld. I'm sure it wasn't there before I went.
Hmm, I'm not sure, but its possible that when you threw the trident into the Horseman Trap, the lightning from the trap may have destroyed the trident...
