When I click the 'realms' button, it says "Invalid session. Please try restarting Minecraft", I restarted Minecraft and I still got the same message

You need to restart the Minecraft launcher as well.
If that does not help, please contact Community Support for assistance and refer to this ticket (e.g. "I have reported this issue on Mojira as MC-XYZ.").
