Sugar Cane Can Be Placed Underwater?

In the latest version of Minecraft in a single player world you can place sugar cane underwater creating a airspace. This only works on sand or dirt and does not work if the adjacent block is water. This is especially strange because you can not place a bamboo under water. Once placed unlike wheat and other plants, flowers and nether variants it does not get destroyed by surrounding water sources. I hope that this strange bug gets fixed.
