Extreme lag with Villagers

When I was building my villager city, I spawned a lot of villagers. For some reason they were constantly lagging, and they only moved about every two seconds. This happens in servers often, but never had I experienced it in singleplayer. The villagers didn't emit sound either when it was frozen. I couldn't speak until the lag went away, and it was only gone for about a second before it returned.
