Unable to swim against water current/flowing water

When exploring caves, I sometimes run into flowing water; sometimes from an underground water source or from a hole in the cave ceiling. I am unable to swim across the moving water and/or difficulty attempting to traverse it. Also seems to happen above ground as well. I am unsure if this is a bug or a new feature to 1.4.2.
