If a player is adjacent to an obsidian next to a portal block like this, and is pushed by water like this, the player is somehow teleported through the water. I figured this out when I was playing on a server and this happened and the server crashed; though I cannot replicate that happening as while testing this on a local server it did not crash it.

I can confirm that if you have water flowing into the base of the frame of a nether portal, and stand in the water, then you will be sent to the nether even though you are not inside the nether portal. In creative, you will be sent through the portal instantly. In survival, there will be a delay as expected, but the nether portal animation does not play during the delay. I tested this in both 1.16.5 and 21w11a and it happens in both versions. Also, I was not able to reproduce the crash that you mentioned (but I was in singleplayer).
