Wearing gold items. Entered nether portal and came out in crimson forest. Three Piglins nearby (no Brutes) and no hostile behavior. Placed chest and started putting items into chest. Attacked and killed by same Piglins.

This issue that you are experiencing, "Works As Intended". If you look at the tags of a chest, you will notice that it has the "
#guarded_by_piglins" tag, which basically means that if you interact with this block, the piglins will become hostile in attempt to guard this object. I've attached a screenshot which shows this.
