I'm in a realm with one other person and despite being in the same location we can't see each other occasionally. this happened twice for about two minutes and the whole time the other person's name was in italics for both me and them.

I would assume they went into spectator mode. (Whether it was intentional and they were trying to trick you, I don't know.)
