Unable to start Minecraft with the latest Java 8 JRE or JDK

When I attempt to do it, the launcher says the Java version is incompatible. And if I set it to bundled Java, Java says it's unable to start the virtual machine.

OK, I reset the Java parameters to default and now it at least starts with the bundled Java.

Minecraft 1.17 needs Java 16.
