When in the nether ghasts fire fireballs, but when they fire and then you go back home and then come back, you will see a floating fireball and you can hit it and then it will launch whatever direction you hit it on.

Not a duplicate, MC-27 is marked as Fixed for Minecraft 1.4.2, this bug report is for Minecraft 1.4.2, meaning it has not been fixed.
Agreed, however if the issue persists, then MC-27 should be repopened and tagged with affects 1.4.2, so the developers can keep a running tally of the issue.
