Scoreboard 'add' erroring as Incorrect Argument

When trying to perform a command similar to 

/scoreboard objectives add "Kills" playerKillCount "Kills"

I get an error (Incorrect argument for command at position 26) immediately after I type 'add'.

This happens in both 1.17.1 and 1.16.5 vanilla minecraft.
