I took no fall damage while falling into shallow lava

I was playing in my 1.18.1 survival world and was exploring a cave. I was going to jump down a hole but I saw there was lava so I used a fire res potion. I was expecting to take some fall damage because lava doesn't negate fall damage unless it's deep. When I jumped however, I took no damage even though the game made the fall damage sound...
