I have created a realm, and my friends are trying to join it, but when they are in the minecraft hub/lobby and clicking on "Minecraft Realms" there are just 2 buttons saying "Buy a Realm" or "get a free trial".

My guess is that this would be a duplicate of MC-249021. If this is the case, simply get your friends to resize their game window (Hit F11) and the invitation button should appear, allowing them to accept your invitation and join your realm.
