Confirmed on 1.4.2 full release. Java 64 bit. It seems to be because the x's act as overlays for the arrows

I've experienced the same issue, and I've had to switch texture packs to resolve it.

I can confirm that this still happens in the 1.4.5 pre-release with the bottom X symbol, but seems to have been fixed with the top X.
