In the Bedrock Edition preview, the camels can swim in the water, but in Java Edition they drown
Steps to Reproduce:
Saddle the camel
Walk into water

Confirmed.
It's not so much that they drown, but rather that they can't swim. At Minecraft Live I believe it was said that crossing water with camels should be easier than with horses. Whether the swimming is part of that or if that was only about the dash, I don't know.
