I have chickens in my base. A good handful of them, but they like to bunch up on my chests and the foot of my bed. If there was consistency in like different corners or on the crafting table I wouldn't think much of it. Cats specifically find the foot of a bed or the top of chests because that's their behavior. I think chickens might have the same code by accident.

Pretty sure that's a thing of chickens and some other friendly mobs preferring the more high elevated spots. Just move the chest lower and they will probably forget about it entirely. I have chickens everywhere as well, and most of them bunch up in the highest spots they can reach, not only chests. They seem so be striving for just the highest point of the world if available.
