Since 23w16a, pottery shards have an apparent typo in their name. They are called "sherd" (spelled with an e) instead of "shard" (spelled with an a).

"Sherd" is a proper word, describing pieces of pottery found at archeological sites, whereas "shards" in archeology generally describes pieces of glass (though it is also used for pottery). As such "sherd" is just a more specific and more scientific term for these items.
Before 23w16a, "sherds" were called "shards" in Minecraft, and this was explicitly changed in 23w16a and mentioned in its changelog: https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-snapshot-23w16a
As such, this is not a bug, but the spelling intended by Minecraft's developers.
