VRAM usage continues to increase forever until it runs out / VRAM leak

When creating a new world, Minecraft's VRAM usage starts at about 1GB. When exploring chunks, the usage continues to increase until your GPU runs out of VRAM, which can happen really quickly with higher render distances. When VRAM runs out, it starts to spill over into system RAM which makes the game stutter a lot and even crash when the system RAM also runs out. With a 4GB GPU the VRAM can max out already after 15 minutes, and so this is very impacting for a huge amount of people.

I haven't tested this on versions other than 1.19.2 and 1.20.1, but it already means this is a slightly older bug, which for some reason still isn't in the bug tracker even though it's really gameplay impacting.

I already talked about this with OptiFine's author, they explain the problem a little more in detail here in a Github thread.

Does MC-170134 describe your issue? If so, you might want to link some of the info you've got from the github report (if it hasn't already been mentioned).

That is the exact issue I'm having. The Github link is in my bug report in blue text "here". There he describes the problem pretty similarly to MC-170134.

I'm going to resolve this as a duplicate of MC-170134 since it appears to be describing the same issue and is much more complete.

For the record, the information provided in this bug report is no way near sufficient, so normally we would have closed this as Incomplete. Bug reports about performance or memory leaks always require some hard data and analysis provided in the bug report. Just a link to a random GitHub issue is not enough (and the information there is also not sufficient for Mojang to analyze the problem).
