Sugar canes can be placed underwater

So when my friend and I were playing in our smp, he accidentally placed  sugar cane underwater. For some reason it doesn't break. I don't know if it's a real feature or a bug. Although it makes a good underwater air bubble. Sorry if there is not enough images. I am currently in a rush i guess
