Opened play in main world in Java addition. No mods - it's vanilla. No other programs were running.
At very start of play began exchanging items between chest and inventory. The world froze and then crashed. Music continued as normal, but game made a repeated clicking sound. This was less than two minutes into the game. Game did not respond to any commands.
Restarted computer (Surface Pro PC) with hard reboot. Restarted Minecraft. All items exchanged from the chest to my inventory were missing (from both chest and inventory). All items exchanged from my inventory to the chest were duplicated (in both chest and inventory).
Items that disappeared were: tropical fish in buckets (5), axolotl in bucket (1), enchanted fishing rods (4), coastal armor trim (6), maps (3), treasure maps (2), mycelium (1 stack of 64), sniffer egg (1), Bee nest with two bees (1).
Items that were duplicated in both inventories: 1 stack of 11 sea pickles, 1 stack of 13 raw cod, 1 stack of 11 bone meal, 1 stack of 2 leads, 1 shears, 1 cartography table, 1 bucket, 1 brush.
Restarted game a second time. Items were still missing.
Please note that I was alive before and after this issue.
Hope you can re-create and thanks.

Because they're gone permanently, they weren't saved anywhere. Nothing can be done except giving you the items again via cheats (/give and /gamemode)
The bug issue is when the game crashes when a chest/barrel is open:
1) items exchanged from player inventory to the chest are duplicated and,
2) items exchanged from the chest to the player disappear.
This is all covered by MC-63, no need to update this issue anymore.
