When looting an Ancient City, I had tripped a sculk shrieker and spawned the Warden. I had tried to fight it yet every time I had died; and going back to where I died I didn't see any of my items on the ground.

Most recent Java version. This happened at least three times. One time my partner was killed and I was there able to see her loot and pick it up. She had placed a bed and respawned wor within 10 or so blocks.
Eventually we were both killed and upon returning all our stuff and the bed she has placed were gone. A crafting table, furnace, planted berries, and a door were still there.
How long did it take you to return to where your items were? There is a built in timer in the game where your items will despawn after 5 minutes.
