Normally when you start breaking a block but then stop the break process resets. But if you put an item frame in front and thn start breaking the block, the progress stays visually even when stopping.
If you collect the item frame while breaking the block, the progress resets
PS: While I do have a minimap mod, I tried it in vanilla too and there it also happens
