In heraldry, a chevron is a v-shape that stems from the sides of a field and does not touch the base (bottom) of a field. A per chevron is similar, but it does touch the base (bottom) of a field. A chevron can be described as a strip of color, while a per chevron completely divides a field into two sections.
Minecraft's "chevron" and "inverted chevron" patterns should be renamed to "per chevron" and "inverted per chevron" to match this.
