Wall signs float slightly in front of the blocks they have been placed on

The Bug

Wall signs have a small gap between them and the block they are placed on. It's not a huge issue, but it looks odd.

Steps to Reproduce

  • Place down a sign on a wall.

  • Look closely at where the sign connects to the wall.

Observed Behavior

Wall signs float slightly in front of the block that they're supported by.

Expected Behavior

Wall signs would not float slightly in front of the block that they're supported by. Instead, they should be properly attached to the block that they're on.

Potential Fix

This could be fixed by converting wall signs to use a block model, and only using entity rendering for the text, to bring them closer in line with other blocks.

And signs on fences have a huge gap.

Oliver Okum

This gap prevents Z-fighting between the backside of the sing and the face of the block its attached to 😉
btw: i noticed this a long time ago in beta 1.6

This gap never really bothered me, don't think it's a bug but if the gap can be tweaked, go ahead! 🙂

Mortvert (Mort Imert)

This isn't a bug.

Please, don't post minor annoyances to the bugtracker.

Is this actually invalid? Seems like an oversight to me. Dunno why it would be intentional behaviour. If this is re-opened, it affects 1.14 and 1.14-pre4.

Just because it's been like this forever doesn't mean it's right.

I don't know about the Minecraft internals but I imagine changing signs might break things.

How long has this been a thing? I don’t like it. It should be touching the block in my opinion.

This actually allows you to write on the back of a placed wall sign.

Never mind, the hitbox actually extends all the way to the supporting wall. So this bug is purely visual and has no effect on sign editing.

Camo_Cat

While this is a bug, it allows for some cool secret messages. while I was able to write on the back on macOS by positioning my crosshair just right, but you can just use a bottom slab, write on the back, and convert that slab to a full block by placing another slab
