Blocks enter a weird limbo state if entities enter the area they are placed almost instantly.

Today I was playing the most recent minecraft version, when I made a crafting table to make a bucket in a village. Right when I placed the crafting table, a sheep walked into the area the crafting table was placed. The crafting table disappeared instantly, but I didn’t get the Item back. When I pressed right-click again, the block suddenly appeared where I looked.

Expected behaviour: The block gets placed and stays there.

Observed behaviour: The block disappears and gets put in your inventory, However it does not show in the inventory until it is moved or dropped and no place animation or sound plays.

Step 1: obtain any block

Step 2: place it while any entity walks into it (tested on cows)
