Falling into the void and dying when loading a world

In previous versions when joining/loading a world on a slower computer the player sometimes would visibly fall into the void but would reappear on the surface once chunks started loading. Now the player takes damage and dies when falling and all items in the inventory are lost. This so far has only happened to me when loading worlds from an older version (e.g. 1.19) but that might be coincidental.
