Sounds produced by /playsound that use the “master” channel can now exceed the player’s volume setting for that channel. Previously, sounds played in “master” with high volume would respect the Master volume slider. This could be a problem since many players play with lowered Master volume.
Steps to reproduce:
Test 1:
Set Master volume to 100%
Run command
playsound minecraft:entity.ender_dragon.hurt master @s ~ ~ ~ 1
(volume = 1)Run command
playsound minecraft:entity.ender_dragon.hurt master @s ~ ~ ~ 100
(volume = 100)
Sounds play at equal volume to the player.
Test 2:
Set Master volume to 1%
Run command
playsound minecraft:entity.ender_dragon.hurt master @s ~ ~ ~ 1
(volume = 1)Run command
playsound minecraft:entity.ender_dragon.hurt master @s ~ ~ ~ 100
(volume = 100)
The first sound plays at the expected volume, but the second sound plays as if Master volume was 100%.
Relevance:
Mapmakers and datapack makers often play sounds at very high volume to produce sounds that don’t fade with distance and play equally in both ears. This will result in players with lowered Master volume hearing sounds that are way louder than expected.
Some sounds in the vanilla game attenuate further than the default distance. I’m not sure if this is accomplished by a “volume” parameter or simply changing the attenuation distance. If it’s volume, this would have implications for the vanilla survival experience, too.
