You can use the E key to get into your inventory, but hitting it again will not leave your inventory.

Duplicate of MC-29893, please use the search function to see if your bug has already been submitted. Currently over 57% of tickets are being resolved as duplicate.
Same for me. Also when looking at chest contents, hitting E takes me to my inventory instead of just closing the chest.
