The time it takes for a copper golem to place its held item in a chest is significantly (though it can vary and sometimes be a short duration) extended if it is presented with two chests stacked vertically.
When there is only one chest placed level with the copper golem, the copper golem will sort the item as intended and as usual. However, placing a second chest on top of the ground chest seems to “confuse” the copper golem. I personally believe that the copper golem is attempting to open the higher chest, but because copper golems are incapable of opening chests that are one block above the layer they are standing, it just gets stuck. The copper golem seems to correct itself eventually and open the bottom chest, sorting the item, but this period of time can be lengthy.
In the example screenshot, there is white wool placed in the copper chest, and both chests are empty.
