On Minecraft 1.21.8 (Java Edition), the recipe book does not show the recipe for rails until the player has crafted rails once manually. This is unintuitive for new players — they cannot see how to craft rails unless they already know the recipe.
As noted on Minecraft Feedback:
“The recipe for normal Rails, is only shown when you have crafted some Rails already, which is a bit contradictory to what the recipes are for.”
This means new players can’t discover the recipe from the recipe book unless they've already crafted the item — defeating the purpose of the book.

No mods installed.
Platform: Windows 10, Java 17, standard game settings.
