25w04a (yeah, took me a while) added a way to data-drive variants for wolves, cats and frogs, among with adding new data-driven variants for cows, chickens and pigs.
Foxes have a type value, that is not that far off from what a variant is - orange foxes spawn in biomes with no snow, white foxes spawn in biomes with snow. In fact, you can recreate these with a data-driven variant right now, you just cant apply this variant to a fox. So whats wrong with foxes, why did they not get the data driven variant treatment?
